README.txt for DITAinformationcenter(TM) distribution January 31, 2010 Authors: Anna van Raaphorst and Richard (Dick) Johnson All components in this distribution package are (C) 2010 VR Communications, Inc. (www.vrcommunications.com). All rights reserved. This distribution package contains: - DITAinformationcenter documentation (XHTML and PDF output files) - DITA Open Toolkit 1.5 - PHP interpreter 5.1.4 - PHP debugging and reporting tools: ditaauthors, ditadebug, ditaedit, ditaids, ditakeys, ditalinks, ditapreview - Sample DITA source files: garage and grocery shopping To use the components in the distribution package as intended, you should also have the JDK (the JRE alone may also work) installed on your system, and have access to a DITA-aware authoring tool. This distribution package copies a directory tree to a location of your choice (the C: root directory is recommended) and creates a DITAinformationcenter(TM) icon on your desktop. Double-clicking the icon opens a customized command prompt that allows you to easily process the garage and grocery shopping sample files. To download and install this distribution package on a Microsoft Windows system: 1.Right-click and save the .msi executable in a directory of your choice (for example, C:\installs or C:\temp). 2. Double-click DITAinformationcenter.msi to start the installation process. 3. Follow instructions as the process progresses. You can save the DITAinformationcenter(TM) files to a location of your choice, but the default C:\ location is recommended. NOTE: Do not install the files in the Program Files directory or any other directory that has a space in its name. 4. When the installation process is complete, check that a new directory tree has been created in the directory location you specified. 5. Also check that a DITAinformationcenter(TM) icon (penguin) has been created on your desktop. 6. Because the original garage and grocery shopping sample files may be overwritten when you edit or process them, we strongly recommend backing up the garage and grocery shopping sample files (the entire project_samples directory) to a safe location outside the DITAinformationcenter(TM) directory. 7. For further information about DITA and DITA Open Toolkit, and instructions for using the garage and grocery shopping samples, see the DITAinformationcenter(TM) documentation, which is located in the documentation\xhtml or documentation\pdf directories. 8. If the DITA source files for the DITAinformationcenter(TM) documentation would be useful to you in planning and implemention your own DITA projects, go to http://www.vrcommunications.com/resources.htm or http://www.xmldocs.info and download the documentation .zip file. 9. When you are ready to process and edit the garage and grocery shopping samples using the DITA Open Toolkit embedded in the distribution package, double-click the DITAinformationcenter(TM) icon (penguin) on your desktop to open the customized command prompt. Navigate to the DITAinformationcenter_GARAGESOURCE or DITAinformationcenter_GROCERYSOURCE directory, and kick off the build using the runbuild command. For more information about processing and editing the sample files, see the DITAinformationcenter(TM) documentation, especially the "processing," "troubleshooting," "creating DITA topics," and "creating DITA maps" sections. We provide the distribution on as as-is basis, without warranties or conditions of any kind, either express or implied.
